Federal officials on Saturday ordered the immediate grounding of some Boeing 737 Max 9 jetliners until they are inspected after an Alaska Airlines plane suffered a blowout that left a gaping hole in the side of the fuselage. An Alaska Airlines jetliner blew out a portion of its fuselage shortly after takeoff 3 miles (4.8 kilometers) above Oregon late Friday, forcing the pilots to make an emergency landing as its 171 passengers and six crew members had to wear oxygen masks. Authorities are still looking for the door from the paneled-over exit, the Associated Press reported.

According to officials, the headrests were gone on seats 26A and 25A and 26A was missing part of its seatback.

So what is the safest seat on a plane? A report from CNN says that the middle seats in the last row of a plane are typically the safest. TIME Magazine, who is also quoted by CNN, said that by looking at row position, they found that the middle seats in the rear of the aircraft had the best outcomes, with a 28% fatality rate. The worst seats for safety were on the aisle in the middle third of the cabin with a 44% fatality rate.

Although Saturday’s scary incident may cause the average flyer to have questions before traveling, it’s important to note that according to the U.S. National Safety Council’s analysis of census data, the odds of dying in a plane are about 1 in 205,552, compared with 1 in 102 in a car.
