‘It’s not something we normally do’: Houston animal shelter looking for short-term foster families

The city of Houston’s animal shelter BARC is at full capacity. The shelter has two locations but has recently had to open pop-up kennels to meet the demand.

Now, BARC is asking for the public’s help in finding these pets a good home, even if it means temporarily.

On KPRC 2+ Now at 9, BARC Deputy Shelter Director Cory Stottlemyer explained that the shelter is doing all it can to help the animals. This includes extending operating hours, staying open on off days, and completely waiving adoption fees.

The shelter is also pushing for short-term fostering just to alleviate the challenges it is facing. Stottlemyer says this isn’t something they would do if they had another choice.

“It is not something we normally do here at BARC,” Stottlemyer said. “Right now, we’re telling the public if you can foster even short-term, just for the weekend, just through the holidays, thats great. We need every kennel space we can get right now.”

BARC is open from Tuesday through Sunday with varying hours and will be waiving adoption fees until December 23.
