Suspect goes on 2-day crime spree before putting 86-year-old woman in chokehold during north Houston robbery, HPD says

HOUSTON – More charges have been filed against a man who police say went on a two-day crime spree before placing an 86-year-old woman in a chokehold during a robbery in north Houston on Monday.

The man, identified as 60-year-old Melvin Walker, is facing multiple charges.

According to records, Walker was charged with evading arrest, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and felony in possession of a weapon on June 26. He was also charged with burglary with intent to commit other felony and aggravated robbery on June 27.

Details on the previous crimes he allegedly committed before his stop in north Houston have not been released at this time.

Aggravated robbery caught on camera

According to the Houston Police Department, the burglary happened at around 8:54 a.m. in the 4800 block of Robertson Street.

The doorbell camera shows the moment the suspect approached the elderly woman, who was standing in what appears to be her front garden, watering her plants.

The woman and the suspect briefly exchanged words before she threw her hands up and attempted to walk backward. The suspect then rushed toward her, putting her in an aggressive chokehold, then dragging her back into her home.

He then walked out her front gate with a towel on his head.

Police said the woman was hospitalized for her injuries. Her current condition was not disclosed.

Suspect’s arrest

On Tuesday night, HPD announced the arrest the robbery suspect, identified as Walker. He was booked into the Harris County Jail.

“We thank the community for helping us ID him,” HPD said in a tweet. “The victim remains hospitalized with injuries she sustained.”

So far, his total bond amount has been set at $50,000 from the charges filed on June 26.

Walker’s next court date has been set for Thursday for the remaining charges that were filed on June 27.

Criminal history dates back to 1981, documents show

According to the Harris County District Clerk’s Office, Walker had previous charges dating back to 1981, where he was first charged with burglary. He was also previously charged with marijuana possession and felon in possession of a weapon, but those charges were later dismissed.
