KPRC2 Phone Bank raises more than $600K to help Houston flood victims

HOUSTON – As the scope of the 2016 Houston Flood continues to grow, KPRC viewers have stepped up to help our neighbors in need in a big way.

KPRC 2 partnered with the Greater Houston Area Chapter of the American Red Cross to host a phone bank Tuesday and Wednesday to raise money for affected families.

Exactly $601,578 has been pledged within two days of the flood disaster phone bank, including more than $166,00 from individuals. Kroger kicked off the corporate donations, giving $50,000 during the bank's first day. 

Spark Energy increased its donation Wednesday to $125,000 for Houston flood victims. The company says its also matching donations from its customers up to an additional $125,000. This means total donations from the company could reach $375,000.

H-E-B donated $50,000 to the phone bank Wednesday help with disaster relief across the city.  Other Wednesday donors including the Employees Community Fund of Boeing Houston with $5,000; BBVA Compass Bank with $50,000; Sunoco LP with $25,000; Shipley Donuts with $10,000 and Baker Hughes with $10,000.

Representatives with Reliant, an NRG Company, presented the organization with a $100,000 check to aid with flood relief efforts. Reliant was one of many companies to participate in the phone bank.

At least eight people have died in connection with Monday's floods, officials said.

Viewers can still contribute by dropping their change in the donation boxes set up at the registers of Kroger stores across our area.

The Red Cross has opened several shelters across the Houston area. Volunteers are also needed -- call 713-131-5491 or visit redcross.org/volunteer.
