HPD: Deputy shoots, kills man at nightclub

HOUSTON – A man is dead after a deputy opened fire in his direction outside a nightclub, according to Houston police.

The shooting was reported in the parking lot of El Chapa nightclub in the 800 block of North West Mall Street around 3 a.m.

According to officers, Juan Adolfo Ibarra, 24, began firing shots into the air as he was leaving the club, which prompted four Harris County Sheriff's Office deputies working security to control the situation. One deputy asked the man to put down his gun.

Deputies said Ibarra ignored the commands and began running alongside a pickup truck and firing the gun.

"At that point the suspect turns to the deputy, gun in hand, and at that point the deputy, in fear of his safety and public's safety, he discharged his weapon one time," said Jodi Silva, HPD spokesperson.

Ibarra was pronounced dead on the scene. Investigators said two other men were taken into police custody.

The case is being investigated by the HPD Homicide Division and the Harris County District Attorney's Office.
