Houston police officer has heart for homeless, youth

HOUSTON – At a glance, a gathering at Loaves and Fishes in downtown Houston on Wednesday was simply a kind volunteer effort.  Our neighbors who need a little extra help were able to get food, clothing and toiletries.  But this was more.

"We're catering to them for this Thanksgiving holiday,” said Houston police Officer Sheldon Theragood,  "Keep doing great things in the community.  Keep impacting.  I've been doing for a long time. I can guarantee they can feel some type of way, like this is good stuff, man."

Theragood has a heart for the homeless and for youth.  He started Theragood Deeds,  a nonprofit organization, five years ago to mentor young people.  He also works with Houston’s homeless through the police department.

Theragood realized the importance of giving back.

The police department recognized him for saving the life of a homeless man during Hurricane Harvey.

We first met him after he gave someone his dry socks at the George R. Brown Convention Center during Harvey’s floods.

On Wednesday, Theragood and volunteers again saved lives.  They provided food for the hungry and a smile for those starving for love.

“I really like it, because it gives me a chance to see everything, and it makes me appreciate what I have even more," said volunteer Chiquita Thompson.

Theragood will be featured in an upcoming episode of "The Eyes of Texas" podcast on Dec. 4. Subscribe now wherever you get your podcasts so you don't miss a show.
