Greater Houston Parenting Expo held at Memorial City Mall

Local 2 sponsors event that showcases almost 40 local businesses, organizations

HOUSTON – Memorial City Mall was the place to be Saturday for the Greater Houston Parenting Expo.

With everything at your fingertips, the parenting expo was a way to gather information of what is available in our community, from school and tutoring to swim lessons.

"Learning to swim is one of the easiest ways to make sure your children are water safe," said Tracy Laman of Houston Swim Club. "We're also talking about putting a fence around your pool and making sure that parents know CPR and all of the things that encompass water safety."

Local 2 sponsored the event that showcased almost 40 local businesses and organizations.

"We try to get kids and help them with the college process," said Julisa Patiño of College Help 4 You. "We help them with the application process, summer enrichment programs, financial aid, essay revision, just getting them their tutoring and their grades."

There was even an organization to help members of the military read adjust to civilian life.

"We offer peer-to-peer counseling and mentoring. We also offer job placement. We can help with resumes," said Samuel Askins of Camp Hope. "We do interim housing for the combat veterans who are struggling with post-traumatic stress and can't seem to get it right. What we offer is basically a restoration and recovery program for combat veterans."

Several Local 2 personalities also met with viewers to sign autographs and take pictures.
