Former apartment assistant manager accused of stealing $90K in rent payments

PASADENA, Texas – A former assistant manager at an apartment complex has been accused of stealing $90,000 in rent payments given to her by tenants, according to court documents obtained by KPRC2.

Mary Haynes, 40, has been charged with felony theft and was arrested, according to officials.

Haynes worked as an assistant manager at Park at Fairmont Apartments, located on the 6000 block of Fairmont Parkway in Pasadena, according to the documents.

She was fired by the time a criminal investigation had begun, court documents confirm.

While working at the apartment complex Haynes either cashed or deposited 31 rent payments, which turned out to be money reported missing during an audit from July 2015 through May 2017.

At least two residents fell victim, according to prosecutors. In those instances, they issued rent payments in the form of money orders to Haynes, whose job it was to collect and deposit rent. Money orders were made in payment to Haynes, however, they were meant to be deposited in a corporate account for monthly rent, according to court records.

Haynes was arrested on a felony theft charge and posted $100,000 bond, as of Wednesday. Her next court appearance is scheduled for Dec. 14.
