HOUSTON – Some Houston restaurants were closed Thursday morning because of a national day of protests aimed at highlighting the importance of immigrants in America.
A Day Without Immigrants gained momentum on social media. In addition to Houston, rallies and protests were planned in cities like Philadelphia, Washington, Boston, Chicago and New York.
It comes in response to President Donald Trump, whose administration has pledged to increase the deportation of immigrants living in the country illegally. The president also campaigned on the promise of building a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border, and blamed high unemployment on immigration. Recently, he called for a ban on people from seven Muslim-majority countries coming to the U.S.
Natachee’s Supper ‘N Punch in Midtown Houston was closed Thursday morning. A note posted on the door said that the move was in solidarity with those participating in the protest.
A similar message was posted on the window at Tacos A Go-Go, which closed all three of its locations.
Viewers have also sent in pictures of other business with messages posted on their windows about changes due to the protests.
