BEXAR COUNTY, Texas – For the first time in decades, a convicted baby killer was seen outside of prison.
Genene Jones, 66, was transferred Monday afternoon from the Murray prison unit outside of Waco to the Bexar County jail.

Jones is facing five recently filed murder charges stemming from the deaths of children in the 1980s. Jones is suspected of killing more than 50 children during her time as a pediatric nurse in San Antonio and Kerrville in the late '70s and early '80s.
Jones was convicted in 1984 of killing Chelsea McLellan by giving the 15-month-old an overdose of a powerful muscle relaxant. At the time of Chelsea’s death, Jones was working as a pediatric nurse at a clinic in Kerrville.
Even though Jones was sentenced to 99 years in prison, she was scheduled to be released in February 2018 because of old mandatory sentencing guidelines. Those guidelines were repealed by the state legislature, but that change could not be applied retroactively.
As Jones’ release date neared, victims’ rights advocates and parents launched a crusade to have the other baby deaths re-examined by the District Attorney’s Office. Since May of this year, a Bexar County grand jury has indicted Jones in five other infant deaths.
Jones was brought to Bexar County to be formally arraigned on those charges.
