Cinco Ranch HS grad among survivors of UT Austin campus stabbings

KATY, Texas – A Cinco Ranch High School graduate is among the survivors of the deadly knife attack at the University of Texas at Austin.

Stuart Bayliss is recovering with his family at his side in Austin.

"Get me to my son, just get me there -- they were in a hurry," said Barbara Rozier, recalling how frantic her long-time neighbors were as they left for Austin on Monday.

Of all the thousands of students on the UT campus, neighbors were stunned to learn one of the victims was a kid who grew up down the street.

"Now to hear that it's their kid, it's closer to home," said Brad Gimmestad.

Bayliss, 20, is an engineering student at UT. Neighbors say he is good with his hands and always willing to help them out.

"He just painted our bedroom not long ago. He's a hard worker," Marilyn McGuire said.

Neighbors are hopeful he makes a quick and complete recovery.

A GoFundMe page was set up to help with Bayliss' medical expenses described his severe injuries.

From the page:

"He sustained multiple injuries that will require months of healing and physical therapy. Stuart went through a 5+ hour surgery and was kept in ICU overnight. He had major surgery on his right hand. They had to repair 7 severed tendons, 2 severed nerves and 2 severed main blood vessels in his middle finger. The also removed a clot from the stab wound on his lower right back and packed it. Prior to that he had surgery to repair his right lumbar artery that was injured."
