Ceremony to mark end of Galveston beach expansion project

End of months long project to be commemorated Thursday

GALVESTON – After months of work, a project to expand Galveston beach has been completed.

Crews wrapped up work last month on a $19.5 million project, which began in January.

The project placed more than 1 million cubic yards of sand on the beach from 12th Street to 61st Street.

A ribbon cutting took place Thursday at the Galveston Island Convention Center to officially commemorate the end of the project.

Texas Land Commissioner George P. Bush was awarded a lifetime membership of the Galveston Regional Chamber of commerce at the ribbon cutting ceremony for his effort on the expansion project.
