Police search for driver involved in ATV crash that left child injured in Highlands

HIGHLANDS, Texas – Harris County officials are searching for a driver involved in a hit-and-run accident that left a child severely injured in the Highlands on Sunday afternoon.

The incident was reported at 2:31 p.m. at 201 Begonia Lane.

Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said a woman driving a silver Honda Pilot struck the child, who is 7 to 10 years old, and was riding on a four-wheeler, with her vehicle after she ran a stop sign. The child was flown by LifeFlight to a hospital.

Joseph Benningfield witnessed the accident as he was pulling out of his driveway.

"I saw the impact. I saw the four-wheeler and the little boy flying through the air. I ran to him, and he was unconscious," Benningfield said.

Gonzalez said the woman ran from the scene. He said the female driver apparently was following a driver in a blue vehicle and, for unknown reasons, both vehicles blew past the stop sign, leading to the child being struck.

Investigators also want to speak to the driver of the blue car.

“There are two cars involved, but the person that we are really interested in is who is driving that Honda Pilot because they were involved in this crash and they fled the scene,” said Sean Teare, with the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.
