BAYTOWN, Texas – An 84-year-old man was injured Wednesday during a drive-by shooting in Baytown and police are hoping surveillance video of a vehicle will lead them to the suspects.
The shooting was reported about 6:30 a.m. in the 9600 block of Pinehurst Drive.
Baytown police said the man and his friend were out for their morning walk when a vehicle drove up behind them. Someone in the vehicle fired a shot before the vehicle sped away from the scene, police said.
Police Thursday released surveillance video of the suspect's vehicle. They described it as a light-colored, four-door sedan, possibly a Chevy that is missing the front license plate.
"We woke up this morning and we heard pounding. We really didn't know what it was, but it sounded like gunshots," said Patricia Yates, a neighbor. She said the shooting is "very unusual. We've lived here since 1993. Quiet neighborhood, kids grew up here. We're not afraid to walk around or you know go outside in the dark or whatever, but we've always felt very safe here."
Police said the elderly man was flown to a Houston-area hospital, where he was undergoing surgery.
The vehicle was described as a light-colored sedan, police said.
Baytown Police said they were looking at every possibility behind the motive of the shooting.
"I'm real cautious to classify it as a targeted shooting because we don't know that it is. Again the fact that it's in an area where there's not a lot of crime that happens, especially of this nature, the time of the day that it happened. It lends itself away from it being random," said Baytown Police Lieutenant Steve Dorris said.
Anyone with information about the case is asked to call Baytown Crime Stoppers at 281-427-8477.
