Off-duty officer shoots at robbery suspect outside bank in northeast Houston, police say

HOUSTON – Police are investigating after an off-duty officer discharged a firearm at a robbery suspect at a bank in northeast Houston, officials said.

The incident was reported around 1 p.m. in the 3400 block of Tidwell Road near Highway 59.

Police said a woman attempting to get out a vehicle with a hefty bag of money from a business was attacked by the suspect as he tried to grab her bag. Police said the woman's screams alerted an off-duty Houston police officer and he ran toward the woman.

Police said the suspect pulled something from his waistband and the officer fired his weapon. Police said the suspect let the woman go and fled the scene.

It is unknown if the suspect was struck during the shooting.

Investigators believe the suspect was waiting for the woman and probably followed her from another location.
