FFA student's show pig killed at Dekaney High School barn

HOUSTON – As a student in the Future Farmers of America program, Destiny Potts could often be found at Dekaney High School's barn, taking care of her show pig, Daisy.

“We built a bond together,” Potts said. “She wasn't any sort of pig. We built a bond.”

But this morning, Destiny received a disturbing call from her FFA advisor.

Daisy, her pig, was dead.

“She stated that my animal had been attacked by wild dogs,” Potts said.

KPRC received pictures of Daisy's body and have blurred them because of their graphic nature. Destiny's mom, Rachelle White, rushed to the school and was there as Destiny went to see her mauled pig one last time.

“She was crying even more when she came out because of how she (Daisy) looked,” White said. “She was eaten.”

It's not the first animal found dead this school year at Dekaney's agriculture farm.

“This year, there was a cow that was killed and mauled by the wild dogs,” White said.

In FFA, students invest in their animals, buying them, then paying for the animal's feed and medical expenses. Destiny's mom is upset. She wants to know how Spring ISD will prevent this from happening again.

“Are they going to go out to all of their barns?” White said. “Go out to Spring? Go out to Westfield and see if the facility is safe enough for these animals that these kids pay for?”

Destiny was going to show Daisy at the Spring Livestock Show and Fair. She had sponsors. Now, Destiny has to figure out what she can do in time for the show.

Spring ISD sent KPRC this statement:

“Spring ISD Police are investigating the death of a pig that was found early this morning at the Dekaney High School agriculture barn. At the same time, our district maintenance department has identified an eroded area beneath the fence that is being repaired.

"Although there was one incident a few months ago when a pack of dogs got into the pasture and killed an animal, Spring ISD Police have not yet confirmed what caused the pig’s death. The police are conducting a full investigation that will include working with animal control.

"The care and safety of animals is very important to us, especially those animals that belong to our students and are serving as projects for the upcoming Spring Livestock Show and Fair. We intend to take all steps necessary to secure the safety of the animals housed in our facilities.”
