No shooting at Memorial City Mall, rather smash and grab incident at jewelry store, police say

HOUSTON – Houston police said there was no shooting at Memorial City Mall, rather a smash-and-grab incident was reported at a jewelry store inside the mall Saturday evening.

The incident was reported at 7: 45 p.m. after several false reports of a shooting at Memorial City Mall.

Police surrounded Macy's looking for a possible active shooter. Macy's customers had barricaded themselves inside the store's bathroom after hearing possible gunfire.

After investigating the scene, police said there was no evidence of a shooting incident.

Police said no injuries occurred, and the situation was stable and under control.

Police said surveillance video showed a man smashing a case at a jewelry store with a hammer several times. The sounds from the hammer being smashed against the glass may have sounded like gunfire, police said.
