HOUSTON – Three Sam Houston Race Park horse trainers were suspended and charged after eight horses tested positive for drugs at two different tracks, according to court documents.

A hearing was held on Friday regarding the trainers Judd Kearl, Jose Sanchez and Brain Stroud.

All three trainers racing licenses were suspended because a post-race blood serum taken from their horses tested positive for Nomifensine, which is dangerous for human consumption.

Authorities said the class 1 drug has not been tested on horses, but has been removed from the market by the FDA. Authorities said the drug was used on the horses to gain advantage and cheat.

Stroud’s horse “Desdemona Rambler,” who won the eighth race at Retma Park on June 17 had tested positive for Nomifensine post-race.

Kearl’s four horses, Zoomin N Celebrating, Chivalri, Tellem Honeys Here and Million Dollar kiss all tested positive for Nomifensine post-race.

Sanchez’s two horses, Contentious Strike and Dancers Toast both tested for Nomifensine post-race.

All three trainers have been charged for violating the Texas Racing Commission’s Rules for each horse that was tested positive for the drug.
