Man killed in Fourth Ward shooting, police say

HOUSTON – A man was killed in a shooting Sunday afternoon in Fourth Ward, Houston police said.

The incident was reported around 6 p.m. at an apartment complex in the 1200 block of Gillette Street.

Police responded to call that reported several shots were heard.

The victim has been identified as 35-year-old Tremayne Givens.

Police said Givens had gotten into some kind of disagreement with another man in front of his apartment building when the other man pulled out a pistol and began firing at him.

Neighbors told Channel 2 News there was a hail of bullets fired.

“I heard something fly by like it was a whiz like sound, it was a gunshot.  And the others were like someone’s shooting down there, run back to the house,” Tracy Wilhite said.

“I heard the shots and ran. I kept talking to him to keep him alert until the paramedics arrived,” Gladys House said.

House said she heard the shots and ran to her friend Givens, also known as “Tree,” to help keep him alive.

House said she and another woman gave him CPR and tried to stop the bleeding.

“It was pretty bad, there was blood all over his head.  I put my hand on where the bullet had penetrated his head and she began to apply pressure to his chest,” House said.

Neighbors said Givens was an incredibly giving man, who volunteered his time helping register kids for the Freeman’s Town Summer Youth Program and even donated money to the program to help make it more successful.

Givens worked for the City Of Houston and was attending HHC and studying to be a welder.

The shooter in this case ran from the scene.

Houston Police are investigating the shooting.

Givens’ older sister Katina Givens said she is praying for justice in this case.

“I hope they find whoever that did this to my baby brother,” Katina Givens said.

Anyone with information in this case is urged to contact the HPD Homicide Division at 713-308-3600 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
