Menil Collection to close for part of 2018

HOUSTON – It's a favorite among Houston's art scene. Many celebrities have even been known to stop there when they're in town. But for a good portion of 2018, people will need to get their art fix somewhere else. The Menil Collection will close its main museum building for repairs starting Feb. 26.

The repairs will include sanding and treating the floor. A Menil Collection spokesman said that because the pattern of the floor in the main foyer and corridor stretches the full length of the building, the entire floor must be refurbished at one time. The Menil will also take this time to complete an update of its fire detection sensors, a process that has already begun.

The other Menil buildings and green spaces will remain open during the temporary closure. The areas that will stay open include the Cy Twombly Gallery, the Byzantine Fresco Chapel, the Dan Flavin Installation at Richmond Hall, the Menil Drawing Institute and the Menil Bookstore.

Menil's main building is expected to reopen in the fall of 2018.
