HOUSTON – A 23-year-old man has been charged with murder for shooting a 40-year-old man to death last month during an argument in the 3100 block of Anita Street.

Police said Alfred Earl James, of Houston, saw Joe Roy Cockerham III strike his vehicle around 1:30 p.m. April 28 while Cockerham was driving past the Anita address. Cockerham returned to his home on the same street and James confronted him, police said.

Cockerham produced a pistol during the ensuing argument, according to police.

When James did not back down, Cockerham shot him in the chest, authorities said.

When James attempted to get to his parked vehicle across the street, Cockerham shot him several more times in the back, according to authorities.

James fell in the street and Cockerham stood over him and shot him multiple times before leaving the scene in a gold Chevrolet Impala, police said.

Anyone with information on Cockerham's whereabouts is asked to contact the Houston Police Department Homicide Division at 713-308-3600 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
