HOUSTON – The Houston City Council approved Wednesday a ban aimed at ending homeless encampments and panhandling in the city.
The ordinance prohibits temporary shelters, tents and unauthorized outdoor cooking devices in public areas.
Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner applauded the vote in a tweet, saying the new regulations, which also cracks down on panhandling in medians and sidewalks, strike a delicate balance with his overall goal of permanent supportive housing for the homeless.
Thank you #Houcouncil for approving new regulations regarding homeless encampments/panhandling. These are small part of holistic approach.
