MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Texas – The former director of the Tomorrow's Promise Preschool, a day care facility in the Montgomery United Methodist Church, was arrested after the day care's finance department discovered money was missing.

Deputies said Denise Sarver, who was employed as the director from 2009 to 2015, left in March 2015 to begin her own day care, Mimi's Little Scholars Christian Academy, which closed in January.

The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office said when MUMC's finance department reintegrated its bookkeeping system from the preschool into the general church bookkeeping program, it found that approximately $20,000 was unaccounted for, along with several other abnormalities in the books.

Deputies said an investigation showed Sarver had clients leave the payee line blank on their tuition checks and would then write the checks out to cash at her personal bank or the bank from which the check was drawn.

Sarver was arrested Thursday and charged with felony theft.
