KATY, Texas – Christmas came early for members of a church congregation in Katy, but it was quickly destroyed after a thief stole the donated presents.
Someone broke into the church of Holy Apostles on the Grand Parkway Sunday night or Monday morning and stole a bunch of presents that were donated.
Pastor Darrel Profit said, “The amazing thing is, if they were in need, all they had to do was come and ask us. We would have helped. So, as I looked at this, I had more of a sense of compassion for those who would do this."
Forty Christmas gifts that were worth several thousand dollars are gone, just like that. The church had been collecting the presents to hand out to its members who've fallen on hard times.
The thief opened the presents first, leaving only the wrapping paper behind.
The thief also ransacked a church office, stealing at least one iPad and causing about $1,000 in damages.
The Harris County Sheriff's Office is investigating.
Members of the congregation and other churches are stepping in to help replace the stolen presents.
