HOUSTON – Isis Hawkins says her 7-year-old son Jordan loves to learn, and up until last week he loved going to school.
“He does not want to go to school at all,” Hawkins told KPRC. “He said he doesn’t want to see the bad teacher.”
Hawkins said it all started last week when she got a phone call from the principal at Nitsch Elementary in the Klein ISD telling her there had been an incident involving Jordan and a substitute teacher.
“The teacher told him to get up and he continued to cut paper,” she said. “The teacher came around, grabbed him by the right arm, shoulder and picked him up and pushed him.”
According to Hawkins, another teacher witnessed the incident and notified school administrators.
In a statement, a spokesperson for Klein ISD said, “Last week, it was reported that a substitute teacher at Nitsch Elementary School behaved unacceptably when disciplining a child. The administration and Klein Police Department immediately began an investigation. The Klein Police found no cause for charges to be filed. While the behavior did not meet the legal definition of assault, Klein ISD takes a firm stance on such matters and the substitute is no longer employed by the district.”
Jordan is autistic and Hawkins said his special needs were not met by the substitute.
She would like to see more training so they know how to properly handle certain situations.
“We trust them with our children,” she said. “For this to happen is unacceptable.”
