Deputies: 2 men on run after attacking off-duty officer at gas station

PORTER, Texas – An off-duty sergeant from the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department was being treated at a hospital after he was attacked by two men in the parking lot of a gas station Saturday, the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office confirmed.

The sergeant, whose name has not been released, is a 20 year veteran of the department, officials said.

Investigators told KPRC2 the sergeant and his wife arrived at Summerhill Food Mart, on the 24200 block of Sorters Road, to purchase ice for a hunting trip at 6:30 p.m. Saturday.

Officials said surveillance video showed two men approach the off-duty sergeant and attack him. Investigators believe they did so in an attempt to rob the man.

During the attack, the off-duty sergeant's wife grabbed her gun and fired at the men, according to investigators. The off-duty sergeant was also able to get his gun and fire, officials said.

It was unclear how many shots were fired, but multiple shell casings littered the parking lot. Officials said the off-duty sergeant suffered injuries to his face. His wife was not hurt.

The two men drove off in a red early 2000s Chevrolet pickup truck, officials said.

Investigators said the off-duty sergeant was not in uniform and there was no indication that he was targeted because of he is a member of law enforcement.
