Katy ISD monitors data breach at third-party vendor
KATY, Texas – The Katy Independent School District sent out an email to parents Monday after a potential data exposure.
The district said SunGard K-12, a third-party student and employee data management vendor, informed Katy ISD about a possible data breach connected to a software installation company. The software sent other school districts unauthorized data without the district's knowledge.
The breach involved information from students in the 2013-2014 school year, officials said.
According to Katy ISD, there was no evidence that the data was seen by anyone from other districts.
SunGard K-12 offered affected students and staff a free one-year membership to data protection and monitoring services.
The districts said they will take precautions to make sure such breaches don't reoccur.
NOTE: The original headline on this story stated that the data breach happened at an online school. The headline has been corrected to indicate that the breach happened at a vendor, not at a school.
