People gather at site of deadly shooting in SW Houston

HOUSTON – A large group of people has gathered at the site of what is believed to be a deadly shooting in southwest Houston on Sunday.

According to people at the scene, Roberto Bermudez, 38, was shot in the head by Antonio Julio Hernandez, 25, while they were helping Bermudez's mother-in-law fix her home, according to police.

Hernandez fired multiple times and has been charged with murder.

Police were on the scene on Bintliff Drive and Leader Street.

"Apparently the family had gathered at the grandmother’s house and somebody showed up who was invited, the person who showed up pulled a gun and allegedly shot somebody in the head," said Det. Steven Murdock with Houston Police Homicide.

Family members say Bermudez was killed while trying to protect his wife and three children.

They say Bermudez had been called to his mother-in-law’s house to fix a clogged drain, but while he was working he noticed Hernandez in the house pulling a handgun out of his waistband.

Fearing for the lives of his children, both he and his wife,Rosie, grabbed Hernandez to drive him out of the house.

"They saw this guy pull out the gun. My uncle and his wife pushed him, like, trying to drive him outside the house. She said (Roberto’s wife) that she heard a shot and looked to the side and my uncle had collapsed on the floor," said Brian Bermudez, the victim’s nephew.

Family members say Bermudez died at the scene, in front of his wife.

Several family members tackled Hernandez and held him until police arrived.

"They chased him out, tackled him and subdued him until Houston police got to the scene. The suspect was transported to the hospital with minor injuries," Murdock said.
