TOMBALL, Texas – A pregnant woman was taken to the hospital in critical condition after suffering severe head injuries around 12:51 p.m. Monday, according to the Rosehill Fire Department.
As of Tuesday night, April Dorris and the baby are still in critical condition.
"She's pregnant, seven months, as you know," said Derek Cassard, her fiancé. "I don't know what kind of animal could have done something like this."
Cassard said he told detectives he was at work all day Tuesday. He works as a wrecker driver.
The woman was injured at a mobile home in the 22200 block of Main Boulevard in Tomball, according to reports.
The woman's mother was on the phone with her daughter when the line went dead, according to police.
The mother called 911 and rushed to the home, but couldn't get in the house because the doors were locked.
When police arrived, they forced their way inside and found the woman in the hallway in bad shape.
"I wish it was me, I'd trade her place in a second that's all I can say," Cassard said. "We gotta catch this guy before he does this to someone else."
The woman appeared to be in her 20s and was taken to the hospital via Life Flight, according to authorities.
The injuries were so severe, authorities initially thought she had been shot. It is also not known if a weapon was recovered from the scene. Police have not released information about a suspect in the crime.
Cassard said some things were stolen from the home but nothing of great value. He used the word "miniscule."
The Harris County Sheriff's Office Homicide and Crime Scene units have taken over the investigation of the scene.
