Family clings to hope after house in burglarized during flood cleanup

HOUSTON – On one of the worst days of her life, a mother who lives in northwest Houston says someone went inside her home and took what they wanted -- including a family heirloom.

Amber Ambrose wants to encourage others not to be naive because even in a crisis, people can take advantage of you.

“We just said this is unprecedented, this is not safe, I have nowhere to put my baby down to change her diaper,” Ambrose said.

Water filled Ambrose's home last Monday morning, so she, her husband and two young children rushed to a hotel.

“We wanted to get out of here and have a dry bed,” she said.

Her family soon began the clean-up process -- removing drywall and flooring, and dumping it in their front yard.

Then they realized something wasn't right.

“We noticed our TVs were missing, which we knew we had saved,” she said.

But that wasn't it.

“A desktop computer had been stolen with my daughter's baby pictures on it. I looked and my jewelry box was stolen that I was keeping my heirloom engagement ring that was my husband's great aunt's," she said.

Ambrose wore the ring on her wedding day.

“White gold band, with a three-quarter carat, diamond solitaire. Just very simple," she said.

She hoped one day her daughter would wear it on her wedding day.

“For someone to do that to you when you're at one of the worst days of your entire life, it just feels like, unfair,” Ambrose said.

The feeling was only temporary though, because she chooses to focus on the positive.

“I've seen so many people do so much good and my heart is just so full right now,” she said.
