Doctor found not guilty in murder trial involving neighbor's shooting death

HOUSTON – It took a Harris County Jury three hours Monday to decide a Seabrook area doctor who shot and killed his neighbor in May 2013 is not guilty of murder.

Dr. Karl Hormann, who had not commented publicly for three years about the matter, exited the courtroom and said, "Just glad it's over."

On Friday,  jurors heard optometrist Hormann recount the events from the night Brandon Smith died.

Hormann claimed it was self-defense when he shot and killed Smith.

Smith trespassed on Hormann's property during a private party, was asked to leave and was shot three times by Hormann in a public street.

Smith's family still has a pending wrogful death civil suit against Hormann.
