Suspects in gun store smash-and-grab appear in court

HOUSTON – Just days after the bold break-in at a Houston gun store, three of the people arrested in the heist were in district court Friday.

Anthony Cannon, William Steen and Tony Watkins are facing a number of charges, from theft of a firearm to felon in possession.

Several of the guns, they said, were from the Carter's Country Gun Shop robbery in southwest Houston.

Authorities say they conducted surveillance and used a confidential informant to buy guns from one of the guys.

Investigators recovered over 30 guns after a pair of traffic stops and being led to the possible location of the firearms, many of them with price tags still on them from Carter Country.

Investigators said the guns had been stolen from Carter's Country Gun Store in southwest Houston Tuesday morning.

A relative of one of the suspects believes he got mixed up with the wrong crowd and said the family is sad about what happened.

Anthony Cannon's aunt said, "I don't believe he's no mastermind to build something like this, Anthony is a good kid. He just running with the wrong people. Y'all going to be all right, y'all going be all right. Just pray, that's all we can do."

Agents with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives say at least two of the suspects will likely face federal charges in this case.

Investigators are still looking for others involved in the burglary.
