UH professor, energy expert Michael Economides dies

HOUSTON – Students and staff at the University of Houston are mourning the loss of energy expert Michael Economides.

Economides, who served as professor at the University of Houston's Cullen College of Engineering, died Saturday on a flight to South America.

Economides wrote hundreds of journal articles and several books. He was the founder and editor-in-chief of the online publication, Energy Tribune. He also offered commentary for FuelFix, the energy website at the Houston Chronicle and KPRC Local 2 News.

Economides was born in Cyprus. He earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in chemical engineering from the University of Kansas, and then received a doctorate degree in petroleum engineering at Stanford University.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
