HOUSTON – They're an inexpensive way to add a little fun to the back yard. But, the nation's top consumer safety agency has issued an early warning for parents considering a portable pool.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission is urging parents to prepare early for pool safety -- in particular, consumers eying portable pools. That includes everything from blowup kiddie pools to larger models. They're cheaper and require less maintenance. But the head of the CPSC, Inez Tenenbaum, said those pools pose risks, too.

"Portable pools have become more affordable, but they hold thousands of gallons of water. So parents need to know they need to take the same type of steps to save lives if they're going to use a portable pool," Tenenbaum said.
The CPSC advised parents to plan on emptying small kiddie pools after every use and have a safe place to store them. Also, larger portable pools should have a cover and the ladder should be stowed when not in use. And finally, learn CPR and other life-saving skills in case of an emergency.
They also advise warning neighbors about a temporary pool in the yard this summer.
