Houston – If there’s anyone who knows where to find the best tacos in Texas, it’s José Ralat.
As Texas Monthly’s Taco Editor, Ralat has spent years traveling the Lone Star State, tasting thousands of tacos and sharing the stories behind the restaurants, families, and traditions that make Texas one of the country’s premier taco destinations. That passion is on full display as Texas Monthly prepares for Taco Fest South, a celebration of tacos, Mexican culture, music, and art featuring some of the state’s best taquerias, including several from Houston. The festival gives taco lovers the chance to sample restaurants featured in Texas Monthly’s prestigious 50 Best Tacos in Texas and 25 Best New (and Improved) lists.
Among the Houston restaurants earning recognition in the magazine’s latest 25 Best New list is Huncho’s Tacos, a family-owned restaurant that has quickly built a loyal following thanks to its commitment to authentic Mexican flavors and premium ingredients.
For co-owner Shane Allana, the recognition is especially meaningful in a state where tacos are more than just a meal.
“It was major for us because tacos are probably our staple food here in Texas,” Allana said. “José visited several times, tried our Ribeye Taco, and understood our vision.”
Huncho’s Tacos was founded on a simple philosophy: great tacos begin with exceptional ingredients. The restaurant specializes in premium halal meats, fresh house-made salsas, and recipes inspired by taco traditions from across Mexico and Texas.
Their signature Ribeye Taco has become the restaurant’s best-selling item. Built on a handmade corn tortilla, it’s topped with perfectly marbled ribeye, mozzarella cheese, grilled onions, fresh lime, and salsa verde.
Beyond serving great food, Huncho’s celebrates the diversity of Mexican cuisine by featuring tacos inspired by different regions, from Monterrey and Mexico City to Tijuana and Tex-Mex favorites.
