HOUSTON – For many Houston families, the weeks before the first school bell rings come with a long shopping list and an even longer to-do list. The Mayor’s Back 2 School & Health Fair, presented by Shell, is designed to help check off both.
Now in its 16th year, the fair has served nearly half a million Houston-area families — making it one of the city’s largest annual community outreach events. This year, approximately 20,000 students are expected to receive free backpacks filled with grade-appropriate supplies.
Registered students and their families will also have access to free health, vision and dental screenings, dental sealants, immunizations, mental health resources and community services — plus family-friendly activities throughout the day.

Registration is preferred and space is limited. Families will need to provide a phone number, home city, state, ZIP code, school district, school name and grade level. On the day of the event, attendees must bring their registration confirmation and a valid photo ID. Volunteers are also needed, with morning, afternoon and all-day shifts available.
Make it a family outing on Saturday, Aug. 1, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the George R. Brown Convention Center — and start the school year strong.
