HOUSTON – One of Houston’s signature Juneteenth celebrations returns to Emancipation Park this weekend, bringing together culture, community and history in honor of freedom.
The fifth annual Celebrate Freedom Festival takes place Saturday, June 6, from 1 to 7 p.m. at Emancipation Park. Organized by Juneteenth Houston, the event is part of the city’s 19 Days of Juneteenth initiative, a series of community events leading up to June 19. For the complete event list, visit juneteenthhouston.org/19-days-of-juneteenth.
According to John Nicklos, this is the first year to expand the festivities from one big day to 19 days, bringing communities together.
Founded in 2022, Juneteenth Houston was created to connect and amplify celebrations taking place across the city while honoring the generations of Black Houstonians who have preserved the holiday’s traditions. The organization works with Houston’s historic Black communities, including Third Ward, Fourth Ward, Fifth Ward, Independence Heights, Sunnyside, Acres Homes and South Park.
This year’s festival theme is “Homecoming: Our Heritage, Our Home.”
Visitors can enjoy live entertainment, drum circles, cultural performances, community villages representing Houston’s historic Black neighborhoods, a spades tournament and a community quilt project highlighting stories and shared history.
The festival will also feature a Red Foods Cookoff, celebrating one of Juneteenth’s most recognizable culinary traditions. Contestants will showcase creative dishes inspired by the longstanding custom.
