HOUSTON โ World Ocean Day, observed annually by the United Nations on June 8, is a global initiative focused on ocean conservation, marine biodiversity and climate stability. The internationally recognized day encourages communities, organizations and youth to take action in protecting the worldโs oceans.
This yearโs theme, โOne Ocean, One Climate, One Future โ Together,โ highlights the shared responsibility of preserving marine ecosystems for future generations.
That global message is being brought to the Texas Gulf Coast through a series of free community events in Galveston hosted by Artist Boat, culminating in the 11th annual World Ocean Day Festival.
Multi-Day events lead into festival celebration
Festivities begin June 4 with a screening of โSharkwaterโ at Rosenberg Library. The documentary explores the illegal shark fin trade and challenges misconceptions about sharks, emphasizing their role in maintaining healthy ocean ecosystems.
On June 5, the Underwater HOA Homeowner Workshop takes place at MarMo Plaza. Led by artist Xavier Cortada, the interactive workshop encourages participants to explore sea level rise by creating yard signs based on their homeโs โSea Level Number.โ The evening includes social time with food and drinks and is co-hosted by Vision Galveston and MarMo Innovations.
The celebration continues June 6 at R.A. Apffel East Beach Park with the World Ocean Day Festival. The free event features more than 20 local nonprofit exhibitors offering hands-on activities centered on marine life, conservation and coastal stewardship.
Live entertainment includes performances from the Galveston Ukulele Society, Tomโs Fun Band presented by Young Audiences of Houston, and the Sanggar Tari Citra Indonesia dance troupe of Houston.
Festival activities also include eco-art workshops such as Bucket Brigade interactive beach tours, Ocean Rhythms drum circle sessions, Tentacles of the Deep contour drawing and watercolor workshops, and family-friendly art competitions.
All events are free and open to the public.
Bucket art project highlights coastal stewardship
During a visit to the Houston Life studio, Artist Boat Executive Director Karla Klay joined the team for a hands-on preview of the festivalโs โBeautify the Bucketโ competition. The initiative invites participants to decorate buckets that will be displayed during the festival as a public art installation promoting coastal stewardship and ocean awareness.
