Houston – A special Cinco de Mayo celebration is happening this weekend at the Hobby Center in downtown Houston.
Local nonprofit Grupo de Teatro Índigo is launching its 2026 season with Cinco de Mayo: México, Leyendas, y Herencia (Cinco de Mayo: Mexico, Legends, and Heritage). The second annual production highlights Mexican culture through music, dance, and storytelling rooted in history and tradition.
Featured singer Vanessa Alonzo joined Houston Life to talk about the event and her longtime career in mariachi music. A Houston native, Alonzo began training at age 12 and has gone on to perform in major productions across the country and internationally, including work with Houston Grand Opera and other leading opera companies.
Alonzo said audiences can expect an energetic and emotional performance featuring traditional folklórico dance, mariachi music, and special appearances by acclaimed artists, including Grammy Award winner Aida Cuevas. She added that the show is designed to both entertain and educate audiences on the true history and cultural meaning behind Cinco de Mayo.
The family-friendly event takes place Sunday, May 3, at 7 p.m. Tickets are available at the door and online. Please note, this is a Spanish forward production with a bilingual emcee and Mariachi music in Spanish.
