This Texas artist is turning Titanic artifacts into art

Dirk Strangely uses real coal recovered from the wreckage to create stunning portraits

Houston – History is coming alive in a way you’ve never seen before. Texas artist Dirk Strangely is debuting a stunning new art series, Souls of the Titanic, and for one night, guests can step into an immersive journey through music, art, and history.

What makes this series unique? Authentic Titanic artifacts aren’t just inspiration for Strangely, they are the art itself. He incorporates real coal recovered from the Titanic wreck and mounts it on 1912-era paper to create mixed-media portraits of real passengers, including notable figures like Captain Edward John Smith and Ida and Isidor Straus. The series transforms historical objects into tangible art, creating a deep, emotional connection to the lives behind one of history’s most unforgettable tragedies.

“The concept of Artifactism™ is to let history become the work itself,” Strangely explains. “I wanted to give people something tangible they could connect with, to feel the humanity behind the story of the Titanic.”

The experience goes beyond the gallery. On April 14, 2026, Guadalaharry’s Bar & Grill in Conroe will host an anniversary dinner inspired by Titanic’s final first-class meal. Guests will enjoy a multi-course menu, surrounded by original music played by a live string quartet performing Titanic bandleader Wallace Hartley’s repertoire. What started as an intimate event for family and friends has grown into a one-night opportunity for the public to engage with history through art, food, and music.
