Alley Theatre brings Oscar Wilde’s “The Importance of Being Earnest” to Houston with a fresh twist

HOUSTON – The cast of Oscar Wilde’s beloved comedy "The Importance of Being Earnest" welcomed Houston Life to the Alley Theatre for a behind-the-scenes look at the production.

Actors Candy Buckley and Christopher Salazar shared insight into the classic play and their roles in the witty satire that continues to delight audiences more than a century after it first premiered.

Buckley portrays the formidable Lady Bracknell, one of theatre’s most iconic comedic characters. While the role is written for a woman, some productions have cast male actors for comic effect, including a current London staging of “The Importance of Being Earnest.” Buckley noted there are already plenty of roles for men without needing to take on one of theatre’s great female parts. Alley Theatre Resident Acting Company member Christopher Salazar said audiences will see why once they experience Buckley’s portrayal. Salazar plays John Worthing, a gentleman who finds himself caught in a complicated web of mistaken identities and double lives.

The Alley Theatre production brings fresh energy to Wilde’s famous comedy while honoring the playwright’s razor-sharp wit. Although the story is set in Victorian England, its themes about identity, reputation, and the performative nature of society still feel remarkably relevant today.

The comedy playfully explores the idea that people often perform roles in society, creating alter egos, concealing truths, and navigating romance while trying to maintain their social standing. The result is a whirlwind of clever dialogue, absurd situations, and timeless humor.

While set in Victorian England, the story’s themes about identity, reputation, and social performance continue to resonate with modern audiences.
