A Kroger pharmacist’s guide to everyday wellness in 2026

Houston – In 2026, wellness is getting a refresh. It’s no longer about extremes or cutting everything out. Instead, it’s about simple, everyday habits that are realistic and easy to maintain long-term.

We were back in the kitchen with Kroger alongside Derek David, a pharmacist and health and wellness specialist, to break down how small choices around food, hydration, movement, sleep, and preventive care can add up to better health. David says true wellness is multifaceted. While nutrition is a major foundation, it works best when paired with hydration, regular movement, quality sleep, and preventive care.

One of the biggest ideas gaining traction is the concept of food as medicine. According to David, the grocery cart is one of the most powerful wellness tools people use on a weekly basis. Lean proteins, fiber-rich fruits and vegetables, and simple pantry staples help support energy, gut health, and overall wellness. Kroger makes this approach accessible, and pharmacists are available to answer questions and even walk shoppers through the aisles to help find products that fit individual needs.

Social media trends were also part of the conversation, and David says some are actually worth exploring. Fibermaxxing, protein-forward meals, wellness snacks on the go, and prebiotics and probiotics all support gut health and help people feel fuller and more energized. He recommends starting with baby steps, adding foods like beans, oatmeal, chia seeds, fruits, and vegetables to meals and snacks.

Hydration was another key focus, especially for Texans. David reminds people that hydration is important year-round and not just about water intake. Electrolytes like sodium, potassium, and magnesium play an important role, even when it’s cooler outside and you’re not actively sweating.

Movement doesn’t have to be intense to be effective. Simple activities like walking, stretching, and light strength training support heart health, joint mobility, and mental well-being. The key, David says, is choosing movement you’ll actually stick with.

Sleep and preventive care round out the wellness picture. Quality sleep helps the body reset and improves everything from mood to immune function. Preventive care, including vaccinations and health screenings available at Kroger pharmacies, helps people stay ahead of potential health issues.

David’s message is clear. Wellness doesn’t have to be complicated. Small, consistent choices are often the most powerful, and pharmacists are there to help every step of the way.
