Houston – With the new year behind us, you might still be searching for ways to grow, improve, and connect on a deeper level. January is National Mentoring Month and a great time to highlight the value of guidance and meaningful relationships in our lives. Houston Life co-hosts Derrick Shore and Tessa Barrera sat down with Chantell Preston, local entrepreneur, CEO, and mom to explore how mentorship and connection can help us thrive in the year ahead.
Finding connections and relationships in your professional and personal life is more important now than ever. It’s not just about being around others, she says, it’s about building intentional relationships. Chantell emphasized that the key to growth is surrounding yourself with individuals who inspire and motivate you. That could start with a mentor. Many people recognize the need for a mentor but aren’t sure where to start. Preston’s advice is to begin by looking at your network. That could be your colleagues, friends, or anyone you admire. Who is doing great things? Who inspires you? Also, consider professional organizations, alumni associations, or mentorship programs your company may offer. she shared. The next thing to consider is establishing what you want from the relationship. discuss your goals and what you’re looking to achieve. That sets the stage for a mutually beneficial partnership.
The Do’s and Don’ts of Mentorship
Do: Have a clear plan and be prepared when you meet with your mentor.
Don’t: Waste their time or cross boundaries. Respect is key to maintaining a healthy dynamic.
Do: Set expectations on both sides and ensure it’s a mutually beneficial relationship.
“Perfection doesn’t exist.”
For many, the hardest part is admitting they need help in the first place. Chantel acknowledged this challenge, especially for perfectionists. Recognizing that perfection doesn’t exist and being willing to ask for help is the first step.
Preston told Shore and Barrera that her perspective on success has evolved over the years. She says she used to think success was about money and titles but now, it’s about being present with her children, mentoring others, and changing the narrative for young girls.
Let’s make 2025 the year of growth, connection, and a better you!
