How a Montgomery grandmother says she found relief after 40 years of back pain

HOUSTON – Montgomery grandmother Nikki Cherry, suffered through chronic upper back pain for nearly 40 years before she says she found relief with help from the team at AK Pain & Spine Center.

“You just learn to live with the adapt and push through it,” said Cherry of the pain, which she said led to her missing out on a lot of life including, spending quality time with her grandchildren.

“I had to try to explain to them why grandma couldn’t do something or, you know, if they wanted to make plans for a couple of days away, I’d say, well, let’s see how grandma feels,” she told Houston Life.

Nikki tried everything. “Initially, I just started out with chiropractors, and then I went to alternative treatments. A lot of, trying to exercise, which tended to make it worse at that point,” she said.

The team at AK Pain & Spine decided the best solution for Nikki was to implant a device called a spinal cord stimulator which uses a low-frequency current to change the pain signal.

“The way I like to describe it is we have different information highways going up the spinal cord, one of those information highways, we can just change the signal to turn off the chronic pain. It provides people the ability to get more functionality, better range of motion, and they just feel better overall,” explained Dr. Ankur Khosla.

After 40 years of pain, Cherry said she is ready to take her life back. ”My grandkids are now teenagers, but they still want grandma to go places with them, so I’m going to enjoy that.,” she said.
