Local student breaks records in Rubik’s Cube competition

HOUSTON – Houston Life chats with Alina Zhu, the Fort Bend ISD student whose Megaminx-solving skills made her break North American records in a Rubik’s Cube competition earlier this month.

Zhu won Megaminx Silver at the WCA Space City Summer 2023 event held at the University of Houston, where there were more than 300 speedcubers from the Houston area and more than a hundred competitors.

The Megaminx is a dodecahedron-shaped face-turning twisty puzzle that is very similar to the classic Rubik’s Cube. It’s part of the official competition for Runik’s Cube.

“I know how I can perform my best, so I calmed down and was confident about my skills. But breaking the record was a big surprise to me too,” said Zhu, a 15-year-old rising sophomore who attends Elkins High School.
