HBO Max star Washington Ho joins Houston Life to celebrate Lunar New Year

HBO Max star Washington Ho joins Houston Life to talk about Lunar New Year, the traditions, and events happening around Houston.

HOUSTON – As Lunar New Year approaches, we’re giving you a first look at where you can celebrate the culture and tradition of the holiday with Washington Ho from the HBO Max docuseries ‘House of Ho.’ He joined us live to give a roundup of events ahead.

Washington Ho is a public figure and longtime H-Town supporter! He believes Lunar New Year is a celebration that is vastly different from other well-known holidays because it’s rooted in the Asian familial traditions that take precedence over all others.

If you have watched House of Ho or are familiar with the name, you know family is the foundation in everything. In the Vietnamese culture, kids wish the adults luck, health, and prosperity. Adults then wish for success, happiness, and growth for the kids.

The ultimate goal of Lunar New Year is to think about others and wish them well. All worries, drama, and other things are forgotten about for the week, and the love between family members is celebrated and the top priority.

In honor of Lunar New Year, and Washington Ho’s love and support for Houston, he’s doing a charity event at the Houston Rockets game vs. the Timberwolves. Event details are below.

o Rockets - 1/23/23 Free Throw half-court shot for a donation to Clutch City Foundation. ($1000 missed shot - $5000 made shot)

Either way he will match the amount because whether it’s a win or lose, he wants the Clutch City Foundation to win! The foundation aims to brighten the future of young people through higher education and by promoting social welfare. The whole cast from House of Ho will be at the Rockets game and do the free throw shot for charity and take photos with them.

Some other events happening around town that he mentioned:

o Bravery Chef Food Hall Lunar New Year - 1/21/23 9pm-1am

o Night Market Vendors, games, whole roasted pig, and more! Featuring 12 Lions for the Lion Dance Performance. The event is free to attend.

o Discovery Green - Lunar New Year at Solstice – sponsored by PNC Bank (4-8pm)

o Discovery Green is hosting a Lunar New Year celebration in connection with winter art installation, Solstice, by Studio Iregular. The event, sponsored by PNC Bank, will feature performances by Dance of Asian America and more. Food vendors and additional activities for the whole family will be available. Event is Free to Attend.
