Grand Texas breaks ground on Houston-area theme parks

NEW CANEY, Texas – Grand Texas will hold a groundbreaking ceremony Thursday for two new theme parks that will be added to the recreation complex in New Caney, just northeast of Houston.

The entire 630-acre park will be located near the intersection of State Highway 242 and Interstate 69.

Thursday’s noon ceremony will showcase construction underway for the Big Rivers Waterpark and the Gator Bayou Adventure Park, which will take up about 80 acres of the Grand Texas complex.

Officials said the Big Rivers park will include the largest lazy river in the Houston area, the largest interactive play structure in Texas, a wave pool and water slides.

The Gator Bayou park will be open year-round and include zip lines, obstacle courses, nature trails, a free-fall tower, water attractions and eco-tourism, officials said.

Officials said they aim to open the newest parks by the summer.

The complex already includes the Speedsportz Racing Park and the Grand Texas RV Resort.

The entire Grand Texas park is expected to be completed by 2020.
