Don't fall for Cash for Gold scam

HOUSTON – Exchanging your gold for cash to pay down debt may be a good idea, but before you walk into the jeweler, be aware of scams.

Several gold-buying companies have recently landed on consumer advocates' radars.

Just last week, New Jersey's division of consumer affairs and other state agencies accused 12 jewelers of allegedly violating state laws that require gold buyers to weigh items in front of the consumer and to post metal prices.

So, before exchanging your gold for cash, check up on the buyer and ask a friend for a referral.
