Police searching for 2 who set playground on fire

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas ā€“ Investigators are searching for two people who set a neighborhood playground on fire in the middle of the night Dec. 22 at the Hambledon Recreation Center at 4202 Valedon Lane.

Surveillance cameras captured two people who appear to be male teenagers setting the park on fire.

"Also in the video you can see they're picking up pine needles and other debris in the park and actually piling it on to make the fire bigger," said Capt. Dean Hensley, of the Harris County Fire Marshal's Office.

A person driving by the park spotted the flames and called 911.

"I think it's horrible," said Robin Phelan, who lives in a home that backs up to the park.Ā She told Local 2 she sees suspicious activity happening at the park all the time.

Hensley says the fire didn't spread to nearby homes.

"It's a small fire this time, but somebody could get hurt and that is what we want to stop," Hensley said.

The flames caused about $10,000 worth of damages.Ā The playground is now closed until those damages can be repaired. Crime Stoppers will pay up to $5,000 for any information called in to 713-222-TIPS (8477).
