Here in Houston, we’ve seen daily isolated to scattered rain chances over the past few weeks.
Though slick roads and humidity have been a headache, our temperatures have been staying in the upper 80s to low 90s which will continue to be the case over the next week. The Eastern US will be a completely different story.
Eastern US heat wave?
As a high pressure moves northeast, a heat dome will form due to air sinking and heating pushing temperatures as much 5-20 degrees above average.
Spots such as Washington DC, New York City, and Raleigh could potentially reach triple digits with heat indices being even higher. As a result Heat Advisories and Extreme Heat Warnings have been issued across the Midwest and The East Coast.
Staying safe
There are many ways to stay safe from these potentially record-breaking temperatures. Limit outdoor activity for the morning and late evening. When going outside stay hydrated and drink plenty of water. Check your air conditioning units along with cooling centers.
How does this affect Houston?
The same high pressure causing extreme heat in the Eastern US and the Midwest will increase the onshore wind from the Gulf bringing an increase in tropical moisture and the chance of scattered downpours over the next few days to Houston and surrounding areas.
